Gospel Meditation: Neither Do I Condemn You

By: Fr. Jarrod Waugh, CSC, Pastor

Jesus takes several opportunities during his earthly ministry to point out the hypocrisy of his opponents. I think it is fair to say that part of the reason he does this is actually “tough love” towards some of the scribes and Pharisees. The Pharisee sect would have been, in many ways, the most similar in theological outlook to Jesus’ own teachings. Therefore, perhaps Jesus knew he had a chance to startle into conversion some of their number by challenging and correcting their teachings and practices from “their own side,” at least to an extent.

It is somewhat unclear what the situation of the woman in today’s Gospel was, precisely. We are told she was “caught in adultery.” Is that to say that she for certain had been caught in the act of that sin, and that she was an entirely free and willing party to the sin, or was that just the “charge” that the crowd had leveled against her?

Where was her “co-conspirator” in the sin? Why isn’t he being held to account? Jesus does not seem to equivocate about whether or not she was a sinner, but it is clear he wanted both her and her accusers (and would-be executioners) to know that in no way could this situation be construed as the righteous justly punishing the wicked.

“We are all sinners” is not to say that sin doesn’t exist or doesn’t matter to God. It does. Jesus tells her to “go and sin no more.” But the presumption that we can decide who is a sinner and deserving of punishment— especially of punishment in God’s Name— Jesus seems to imply, is a judgment best left to God himself. Does this mean that Jesus would rule out all punishment for crime, that there should be no justice on earth? I think in this instance it is safer to narrow our examination to what Jesus is teaching us about how we should— and should not— think about who God loves and hates, forgives and condemns. If the woman follows Jesus’ command and sins no more, she has become a saint and will be with Jesus in Heaven. If the “righteous” do not change their ways and continue to see themselves, despite their own sins, as God’s enforcers…they might find themselves elsewhere.

The Year of Hope

Pope Francis declared 2025 as the Jubilee Year of Hope and has called for this Jubilee Year to "be a moment of genuine, personal encounter with the Lord Jesus.” (Spes Non Confundit, 1). Christ is truly the "Hope that does not disappoint."

As Pilgrims of Hope, we are encouraged to draw closer to God through prayer, study, formation, and pilgrimage. The Diocese of Colorado Springs website offers a number of resources to assist on your journey, including recommendations on books, formations/ studies, ministry resources, podcasts, prayers, and more!

The Colorado Bishops have issued a statement on immigration titled "Welcoming the Stranger, Protecting the Common Good." Click the logo to read the full statement.

“As Catholic Bishops of Colorado, we approach the issue of immigration with prayerful hearts, seeking to guide our communities in a spirit of charity, justice, mercy, and prudence. The call to welcome the stranger is woven into the fabric of our faith, and in standing with immigrants, it is our first concern that they know the love of Jesus Christ and their dignity as human beings. We also recognize the responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of our communities, as well as passing on the teaching of the Church on immigration to those who govern.”
